2. Characteristics of Rural Areas
- Defined by population of less than
15'000 people per aimag. By this definition 47% of the population is living
in rural areas.
- Electricity - most of
the rural areas have diesel power. Wind and solar power are used locally on
a small scale.
- Road transport - mud
roads, animal transport and very rarely vehicles.
- Water supply - average
10 litres per person per day (uncentralised water supply system).
- Health centre - 25 physicians
and 78 hospital beds per 10'000 people (1997).
- No. of telephone lines
- from 20 to 200 telephone lines per village.
- Geographical location
in remote areas.
- Education - elementary
and secondary. The strength of Mongolian human resources is racial homogeneity,
a youthful population (50% of the population is 20 years old or younger),
high literacy rate (95%), safe and stable society, linguistic competence and
perseverance.
